About the work

An angled view of the 'factories'(or 'hongs') in the western suburbs of Canton (Guangzhou), looking north-west from the Pearl River. The porticoed buildings are the English and the Dutch 'factories', each with its national flag flying in front of it. In the foreground a large junk is attended by a Tanka boat. On the back are drawings of figures, and part of the Haizhu (or 'Dutch Folly') Fort, Canton (Guangzhou).

The drawing has been squared up in pencil for transfer to a watercolour or oil painting.
