In the life of Mathew B. Brady

The whole life
  1. 1849

A studio in Washington and the meeting with Julia Handy

He opens a studio at 625 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., where he meets Juliet (known to everyone as Julia) Handy.

  2. 1850

    “The Gallery of Illustrious Americans”

He produces an album of portraits of prominent contemporaries, including the elderly Andrew Jackson at the Hermitage; the album was not financially rewarding but drew increased attention to Brady’s work and artistry.

  3. 1850

    Marries Julia Handy

He marries Juliet (Julia) Handy; the couple live on Staten Island.

  4. 1850s

    His eyesight begins to fail

In the 1850s Brady’s eyesight begins to deteriorate; this may in part explain why he later rarely visited the battlefields himself and why many images in his collection are thought to be the work of his assistants.
