About the sculpture

This statuette, which was originally painted, was probably made for display in the home. The naked boy on the right holds poppy heads, a symbol of fertility, which suggests a connection with marriage or childbirth. Several similar statuettes survive, including a Charity with three children in Birmingham (Museum and Art Gallery, inv. P1714'85). Our sculpture nevertheless is a unique work, appearing to have been largely modelled, though the heads of the figures were possibly cast. The artist, formerly known as the Master of the Unruly Children, was recently identified as the Florentine sculptor Sandro di Lorenzo (1483-1554); Principi (2020) dated this group, on the basis of style, to the early 1520s.
