The whole life1708
Flees to Florence by night with the “Massacre of the Innocents”
Bearing his large religious canvas of the Massacre of the Innocents and a note from Count Vincenzo Rannuzi Cospi as an introduction, Crespi flees in the middle of the night to Florence and gains the patronage of the Grand Duke Ferdinand de’ Medici. The canvas, intended for the Duke, had been fancied by a local priest, Don Carlo Silva, and the episode becomes the source of much litigation, in which the Duke remains Crespi’s firm protector for at least the next five years.
