    Recognition at sixty

At about the age of sixty Newman wins recognition as one of America’s outstanding artists. For much of his life he had been unappreciated, overlooked in favour of more colourful figures such as Jackson Pollock; the critic Clement Greenberg wrote about him with enthusiasm, but other accounts say he began to be taken seriously only at the very end of his life. He became an important influence on younger artists such as Donald Judd, Frank Stella and Bob Law.
