This caricature, amusingly titled 'Bobbie Coote and his Magic Putter' shows the British actor Robert Coote looking affectedly innocent whilst tapping his golf ball with his toe into the hole on the green. The son of the British music hall performer and actor Bert Coote, Robert Coote spend much of his working life in Hollywood, and in 1956 created the role of Colonel Pickering in the original 1956 Broadway run of Lerner and Loewe’s musical My Fair Lady.
It would seem from this cartoon that Robert Coote was a keen golfer and that with inside knowledge of his occasionally less than professional tactics, this was drawn by one of his friendly opponents.
