In the life of Richard Avedon

The whole life
  1. 1963

    Photographs the Civil Rights Movement

In 1963 Avedon photographs the Civil Rights Movement; in the 1960s he also photographs protesters of the Vietnam War and patients of mental hospitals.

  2. 1964

“Nothing Personal” is published with text by Baldwin

Avedon’s personal book, with a text by his high school classmate James Baldwin, includes photographs of the civil rights movement, cultural figures and people in a mental asylum; together with Baldwin’s searing text it becomes a striking commentary on America in 1964.

  3. 1965

    Follows Diana Vreeland to Vogue

In 1962 Diana Vreeland, whom Avedon admires, leaves Harper’s Bazaar for Vogue; in 1965 (other accounts say 1966) he follows her there as a staff photographer and works at the magazine until 1990.
