    Grand Prize at the São Paulo Biennial

    Appel received the Grand Prize at the São Paulo Biennial.

    Exhibition: Documenta II

  3. 1960

    Guggenheim International Award

    Appel received the Guggenheim Foundation's International Award at 39 for “Woman with Bouquet”, painted two years earlier, becoming the youngest artist ever to win it.

  4. 1964

    Buys a château near Auxerre

    Appel bought a château near Auxerre. He also lived for long periods in New York, Florence and Zurich; international recognition followed, with exhibitions of his work in many countries.

  5. 28 June 1964 – 6 October 1964

    Exhibition: Documenta III

  6. 1970s

    Turns to sculpture

    From the 1970s Appel favored sculpture, which gave him more freedom to work with form, using wood, aluminum, polyurethane and other materials.
