About the painting

A Ragamala painting of the musical mode Bhairava Raga. Ragamala paintings use a particular scene or person to represent each raga (or mode) of Hindustani classical music. Bhairava Raga is a slow and meditative raga intended to be played or sung in the morning. The scene of Radha rubbing sandalpaste on her lover Krishna on a palace terrace depicts the emotional sentiment of the raga. A formal garden can be seen in the background, irrigated by a Persian wheel.
