Nicodemus en Jozef van Arimathea leggen het dode lichaam van Christus op de grond, bij de voet van het kruis. Maria, Johannes en de drie Maria's knielen bij het lichaam. Op de achtergrond de wederopstanding van Christus en de Anastasis, waar Christus afdaalt naar de hel, hier voorgesteld als een burcht.
