Het dode lichaam van Christus, dat zojuist van het kruis is afgehaald, wordt ondersteund door de treurende Maria en Johannes knielt naast haar. Maria Magdalena kust de hand van Christus terwijl Jozef van Arimatea het doek vasthoudt waarmee hij Christus van het kruis nam. Nikodemus staat klaar om het lichaam te balsemen. Twee kleine schilden linksboven dragen het keurvorstelijk en hertogelijk wapen van Saksen.
