Anverso: Bajando las escaleras. Varias figuras bajan por una escalera, cuya parte superior queda oculta por el suelo de tablazón del segundo piso. Las figuras de primer término son dos mujeres, de frente, vestidas con dengue y pañuelo en la cabeza. Reverso 1 (de la hoja 82): En la taberna. Dos figuras masculinas en una taberna. El de la izquierda de perfil a la derecha, vestido con chaqueta y sombrero. El de la derecha, casi de espaldas y con gorra, está semi recostado sobre una mesa. Ambos sostienen algo en las manos, quizás una bebida o instrumento musical. Al fondo arco de medio punto a la izquierda, sobre el que se ve el balcón del segundo piso, y a la derecha unas escaleras que ascienden haciendo un giro. Reverso 2 (de la hoja 83): Figura femenina ante una mesa. Figura femenina casi de espaldas, ataviada con falda, camisa y dengue, de pie frente a una mesa alargada. Ésta está situada a los pies de una escalera, por donde descienden un par de figuras.

    Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition

    “Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

    A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”

    The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
