London, United Kingdom
It belongs to the collection, but is not on display at present.
This is one of a pair of watercolours by Frederick Walker (1840-1875). The other is Spring, now also in the V&A. Spring shows a young girl picking primroses with a boy companion. Here, Autumn depicts a young woman, alone, holding an apple – the fruit of the biblical Tree of Knowledge. It is probable that Walker is referring not only to the passage of the seasons, but also to the passage of human life, and it may be that the woman in Autumn has lost, and now pines for, her early love.
