About the work
Delvaux specialised in nocturnal scenes and ambiguous subjects. In this drawing he plays with the erotic potential of a claustrophobic interior lit only by a naked bulb. Using black, white and grey, the artist manages to contrast the shadows of the night and the stark electric lighting.

The model Danielle Caneel
Begins working with the 22-year-old model Danielle Caneel, whose slim figure inspires numerous drawings and studies over the next 17 years. With few exceptions, he does not depict her face or cropped brunette hair in his finished paintings, substituting idealized symmetrical features and long blonde hair.
