About the work
Eroticism and her role as a female artist are recurring themes in Dumas’ work. This portrait presents a paintress, but whether it is Dumas herself is not clear. We see a woman looking through spread legs into a mirror under her. She holds a paintbrush in her left hand, as though she is painting the picture at this very moment.
