Stage sets for operas by Vivaldi, Chelleri and Porto

Apprenticed to his father and to his brother, a theatrical scene painter, Canal has by 1718 already taken part in designing sets for operas by Fortunato Chelleri, Giovanni Porto and Antonio Vivaldi; he then travels to Rome.

Rome: Pannini, van Wittel and the turn to the veduta

In Rome Canal comes to know the work of the vedutista Giovanni Paolo Pannini and begins to paint views of Venice; his love of landscape painting grows stronger through contacts with the Dutch artists working in Rome, in particular Gaspar van Wittel. Soon he probably realises that the conventions of stage design stand in the way of his natural gift.

  5. 1719–1720

Rome: sets for operas by Alessandro Scarlatti

In 1719–20 Canal works with his father in Rome on the scenery for two operas by Alessandro Scarlatti, performed at the Teatro Capranica during the carnival season of 1720.
