Anverso: Barcas y pescadores A la izquierda, barca en perspectiva oblicua hacia el fondo. De ella salen dos líneas paralelas (¿un remo?). Sobre esta barca, una figura masculina y, hacia el fondo, líneas curvas insinúan otras figuras. Junto a esta barca, una figura femenina de pie, de espaldas, y frente a ella parece que hay otras figuras, y otra barca con la vela recogida. Al fondo, el mar. Reverso: Apuntes Varias escenas independientes. A la izquierda, una figura tumbada, vista de espaldas. Sobre ésta figura, hacia la derecha, dos rasguños, quizá unas figuras. En la zona inferior, a la izquierda, una figura sentada en una silla, y en su regazo, un niño. Frente a ellos, otra figura infantil sentada en una silla que vemos de espaldas. En la zona derecha, un personaje masculino con sombrero flexible de amplia ala junto a una barca.

“A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid
Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
