Anverso: Escena, figura femenina y zapato de mujer En el centro de la hoja, escena enmarcada por un ángulo recto en el lado inferior derecho. En ella hay tres figuras a la derecha, muy esquemáticas, y a la izquierda, unos rasguños sin identificar. Este dibujo se ha realizado sobre otro muy tenue que no sabemos lo que representa. A la izquierda, vista con el papel girado 90 grados, figura femenina sentada con las piernas a la derecha, girando el cuerpo hacia nosotros y con la cabeza de perfil a la izquierda, tachada. En el ángulo inferior izquierdo, zapato femenino con tacón de carrete y empeine decorado. Reverso: Apuntes de perro Varios apuntes de perro por toda la hoja, en distintas posiciones y de distintas partes de su anatomía. Destaca el perro tumbado del centro de la hoja.

  1. 1885

    A four-year grant to study in Rome

    Having completed his military service, the twenty-two-year-old Sorolla received a grant from the Spanish Academy in Rome for four years of study in Italy. In Rome he was welcomed by the academy’s director, Francisco Pradilla, in whose example the young painter found stability.

  2. 1885

    Paris: his first encounter with modern painting

    A long stay in Paris gave him his first exposure to modern painting; he was especially struck by exhibitions of Jules Bastien-Lepage and Adolph von Menzel. Back in Rome he studied with José Benlliure, Emilio Sala and José Villegas Cordero.

  3. 1888

    Returns to Valencia to marry Clotilde

    Sorolla returned to Valencia to marry Clotilde García del Castillo; by 1895 they had three children — María, Joaquín and Elena.
