Anverso: Mujeres trabajando A la izquierda, un grupo de mujeres trabajando, seguramente lavando ropa. En primer plano, hacia la izquierda, una figura femenina en cuclillas está atendiendo a una niña que está frente a ella, sentada en el suelo. Tras ambas, una mujer de pie. A la derecha, una figura femenina en cuclillas vista de espaldas tiende los brazos hacia delante para ayudar con un bulto de ropas o sábanas a otra mujer que está frente a ella, de pie, pero inclinada hacia delante. En el suelo, varios cestos, y a la derecha, unas escaleras. Reverso: Apuntes de figuras A la izquierda, vista cenital de una figura masculina sentada en algún tipo de barandilla o poyete en el que apoya las manos. Lo vemos de perfil a al izquierda y lleva gorra a la cabeza. A sus pies, dibujo esquemático de una figura agachada. En la zona derecha, vista desde arriba de una figura también agachada, con los brazos extendidos al frente.

    Returns to Valencia to marry Clotilde

    Sorolla returned to Valencia to marry Clotilde García del Castillo; by 1895 they had three children — María, Joaquín and Elena.

    Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons

    The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.

    “A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid

    Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
