Anverso: Apuntes de figuras A la izquierda, figura femenina de perfil a la derecha, inclinada hacia delante. Viste falda larga y delantal corto, y parece que a la cabeza lleva pañuelo. Se ha indicado por inscripción (con iniciales o abreviaturas) los colores de su indumentaria. Bajo este dibujo, otro de una figura en cuclillas, visto de frente. En el lado derecho de la hoja, varios apuntes de figuras agachadas. Reverso: Llegada de la barca En la zona inferior de la hoja, dibujo muy esquemático de una barca llegando a un muelle, en el que hay una figura de pie esperando. En la barca, que es pequeña, hay una figura. En la zona superior de la hoja, inscrito en un rectángulo, dibujo de una figura que podría estar también en una barca llegando al muelle.

Returns to Valencia to marry Clotilde
Sorolla returned to Valencia to marry Clotilde García del Castillo; by 1895 they had three children — María, Joaquín and Elena.

Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons
The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.

“A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid
Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
