Anverso: Figura masculina leyendo y dos perfiles masculinos En la zona superior, busto masculino de perfil a la izquierda, sosteniendo frente a su rostro un diario que está leyendo. Bajo él, hacia la derecha, perfil masculino a la izquierda, al que no se ha terminado de dibujar la parte trasera de la cabeza y parece que se lleva una mano al mentón, como el perfil dibujado debajo, hacia el centro de la hoja. Este segundo perfil también está hacia la izquierda y es de un hombre con bigote. Reverso: Apuntes de figuras En la parte superior de la hoja, busto masculino de frente. Está calvo y tiene larga barba dividida en dos mitades. El resto del rostro está muy sombreado y no se distingue bien. En la zona inferior, varias figuras masculinas, probablemente en el interior de un café o restaurante, del que se habría indicado el espacio por líneas verticales al fondo.

A la izquierda, figura masculina de pie de perfil a la derecha. Lleva sombrero de copa plana a la cabeza y parece llevarse la mano derecha al bolsillo del pantalón. Tras él otra figura, apenas esbozada. Frente a ellos, a la derecha, cabezas de figuras sentadas.

In the life of Joaquín Sorolla
The whole life1885
A four-year grant to study in Rome
Having completed his military service, the twenty-two-year-old Sorolla received a grant from the Spanish Academy in Rome for four years of study in Italy. In Rome he was welcomed by the academy’s director, Francisco Pradilla, in whose example the young painter found stability.

Paris: his first encounter with modern painting
A long stay in Paris gave him his first exposure to modern painting; he was especially struck by exhibitions of Jules Bastien-Lepage and Adolph von Menzel. Back in Rome he studied with José Benlliure, Emilio Sala and José Villegas Cordero.
1888
Returns to Valencia to marry Clotilde
Sorolla returned to Valencia to marry Clotilde García del Castillo; by 1895 they had three children — María, Joaquín and Elena.

Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons
The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.
