Anverso: Escenas de playa Dos escenas independientes. A la izquierda, una figura femenina (de una joven por tener el vestido corto) sostiene en sus brazos a un niño. Ella lleva sombrero flexible de amplia ala para protegerse del sol. Tras ella, una barca con la vela desplegada, y frente a ésta, dos bueyes vistos desde los cuartos traseros. Sobre el buey de la derecha se sienta una figura masculina que se cubre la cabeza con sombrero. Reverso: Apuntes de figuras A la izquierda, cabeza masculina de perfil a la izquierda ligeramente desde atrás. A su derecha, figura sentada en el suelo, de perfil, poco definida. A la derecha del papel, otra figura que parece cubrirse con sombrero.

“A Research”: the Prize of Honour in Madrid
Two paintings linking art and science, “Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope” and “A Research”, won Sorolla the Prize of Honour at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed his friend Simarro in the laboratory, catching the contrast between the reddish-yellow light of a gas burner and the weak mauvish light from the window.
