Anverso: Apuntes de café En la zona superior, figura masculina de medio cuerpo, de perfil a la derecha. Lleva sombrero a la cabeza y está sentado en una silla de pala curva frente a una mesa en la que hay varios elementos de ajuar. El resto de los dibujos se ven con el papel girado 90 grados: En la zona superior, cabeza de frente, y a su derecha, un sombrero. En el ángulo inferior izquierdo, una mesa de un café o restaurante a la que se sientan tres hombres, dos a la izquierda y el tercero, a la derecha, de frente a nosotros. Los tres llevan sombrero hongo a la cabeza. Reverso: Figura femenina sentada Primer plano de una mujer sentada en una silla de pala curva. Está en pose de tres cuartos desde la espalda, con las piernas cruzadas. Lleva el pelo recogido en lo alto de la cabeza, y el cuerpo del vestido tiene cuello alto. A la cintura un delantal, pudiendo tratarse de una camarera de un café o restaurante en un momento de descanso.

  1. 1885

    A four-year grant to study in Rome

    Having completed his military service, the twenty-two-year-old Sorolla received a grant from the Spanish Academy in Rome for four years of study in Italy. In Rome he was welcomed by the academy’s director, Francisco Pradilla, in whose example the young painter found stability.

  2. 1885

    Paris: his first encounter with modern painting

    A long stay in Paris gave him his first exposure to modern painting; he was especially struck by exhibitions of Jules Bastien-Lepage and Adolph von Menzel. Back in Rome he studied with José Benlliure, Emilio Sala and José Villegas Cordero.

  3. 1888

    Returns to Valencia to marry Clotilde

    Sorolla returned to Valencia to marry Clotilde García del Castillo; by 1895 they had three children — María, Joaquín and Elena.

  4. 13 April 1889

    Daughter born: María Sorolla García

  5. 1890

    Moves to Madrid: large canvases for the salons

    The family moved to Madrid. For the next decade Sorolla concentrated on large canvases of orientalist, mythological, historical and social subjects for salons and international exhibitions in Madrid, Paris, Venice, Munich, Berlin and Chicago.
