Anverso: Estudios de figuras. Varios estudios de figuras, probablemente de pescadores. En la parte superior, dos figuras femeninas, una de perfil a la izquierda, con pañuelo en la cabeza y mandil, y la otra de espaldas, semigirada hacia la izquierda, con un manto que le cubre desde la cabeza. Girando el papel 90º, en la parte superior busto de mujer cubierta con pañuelo y rasguños de otra figura. En la parte inferior figura masculina con sombrero y envuelta en una capa; figura femenina caminando hacia la derecha; y figura femenina de perfil a la izquierda cubierta con manto desde la cabeza. Sobre el dibujo se ha copiado por contacto el nº Inv. 12917. Reverso: Apunte de rostro y mano. Rostro femenina de perfil a la izquierda, dibujado a base de trazos rectos y sombras en zig zag. A la derecha rasguño. En la parte inferior apunte sin terminar de una mano izquierda cerrada.

    Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition

    “Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

    A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”

    The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
