Anverso: Niño. Niño pequeño vestido con faldón, semitumbado de perfil a la derecha sobre las rodillas de su madre, de la que sólo se han dibujado las piernas y un brazo, que le pasa al niño bajo el pecho para sujetarle. Sobre el dibujo se ha copiado por contacto el anverso del nº Inv. 12883. Reverso: Apunte de bueyes. Apunte rápido de una yunta de bueyes de perfil a la derecha. Entre ellos, a la altura de sus cabezas, una figura que parece estar tirando de ellos. El papel tiene algunas manchas de tinta que se han copiado por contacto del nº Inv. 12881.

    Grand Prix at the Paris Universal Exposition

    “Sad Inheritance”, a huge canvas of crippled children bathing in the sea at Valencia under a monk’s supervision, brought Sorolla his greatest official recognition, the Grand Prix and a medal of honour, and his exhibit as a whole earned him nomination as a Knight of the Legion of Honour. After this picture he never returned to so overtly social a theme.

    A medal of honour in Madrid for “Sad Inheritance”

    The painting won the medal of honour at the National Exhibition in Madrid. Two of its luminous preparatory oil sketches Sorolla gave as gifts to the American artists John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase.
