  1. 1855

    Move to Paris for Art

    In 1855 Whistler arrived in Paris, rented a studio in the Latin Quarter, and adopted a bohemian lifestyle. He never returned to the United States.

  2. winter 1857

    A Hard Winter in Paris

    The winter of 1857 proved difficult: poor health, aggravated by excessive smoking and drinking, took its toll on the artist amid mounting debts.

  3. 1858

    Friendship with Fantin-Latour and the Courbet Circle

    In 1858 Whistler met Henri Fantin-Latour at the Louvre and through him entered the circle of Gustave Courbet, which included Manet, Legros, Carolus-Duran, and the poet Charles Baudelaire, whose ideas influenced the artist.
