  1. early 1788

    A Prussian minister calls him to the Berlin Academy

    In early 1788 the Prussian minister Friedrich Anton von Heynitz makes him a very financially attractive offer to work at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin.

  2. 20 June 1789

    Appointed professor of portrait painting in Dresden

    On 7 May 1789 Graff tells Count Camillo Marcolini, general director of the Dresden Art Academy, about the Berlin offer; Marcolini reacts straight away, and on 20 June Graff is appointed professor of portrait painting at the Dresden Academy.

  3. 1796

    Copies Dresden Gallery paintings for the Hermitage

    On the order of the Russian empress Catherine II he makes copies of a number of paintings from the Dresden Gallery for the Imperial Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

  4. 1801

    Loses his son Georg

    His second son, Georg, dies.

  5. 1803

    Cataract surgery

    He undergoes cataract surgery. In his last years he turns to landscape painting and develops a sparkling manner that anticipates Impressionism; his landscapes influence Philipp Otto Runge, Caspar David Friedrich and Friedrich Georg Weitsch.
