About the work

One of the pieces that dancer Agnes de Mille created for her first appearances on the New York stage, the "Ballet Class" or "Debut at the Opera," was an early indication of her innovative fusion of dance movements and pantomime. This comic piece deals with the anxieties of a ballerina as she dampens the floor with her watering can and then rehearses before going on stage. The image relates to other de Mille studies based on Edgar Degas's views of the dance in other media.
