About the painting
The pictures made by Indian artists for the British in India are called Company paintings. This one comes from a set of 14 depicting castes and occupations, and shows a cotton-weaver and his wife preparing the warp threads for weaving by brushing them with a starch or rice paste to make them more easy to weave.
