The whole life1844
His own stationery and framing shop
In 1844 Boudin and a partner opened a shop for stationery and frames, where he exhibited the work of visiting artists; he got to know local painters connected with the Barbizon school and attended classes at the municipal drawing school of Le Havre.
1840s
Troyon and Millet urge him to become a painter
In his shop, where pictures were framed, Boudin exhibited paintings by Constant Troyon and Jean-François Millet; they, together with Jean-Baptiste Isabey and Thomas Couture, whom he met at this time, encouraged him to pursue an artistic career.
aged 22 (1846 – 1847)
Gives up trade for painting
At 22, encouraged by the painters he had met, Boudin gave up commerce and began to paint full-time.
1857/1858
Friendship with the young Claude Monet
Boudin befriended the 17-year-old Claude Monet and persuaded him to give up his teenage caricatures and become a landscape painter, instilling in him a love of bright colour and of light playing on water. They remained lifelong friends, and Monet later paid tribute to his early influence.
1859
Debut at the Paris Salon
In 1859 Boudin made his debut at the Paris Salon, and Charles Baudelaire became the first critic to bring his talent to public attention; he went on exhibiting at the Salons.
1863
Takes part in the Salon des Refusés
In 1863 Boudin took part in the Salon des Refusés in Paris, alongside Édouard Manet, Camille Pissarro, James Whistler and other artists.
