About the work

This is probably an illustration for a fanciful oriental tale, but the subject has not been identified. Atkinson illustrated several books, including The Miseries of Human Life (1807) and Manners ... of the Russians (1812). He also painted battle-pieces, scenes of everyday life and literary subjects.
