About the sculpture

This terracotta panel relief is made by Bastiani in the 19th century in Florence. It depicts a monk writing while seated at a desk.

The relief was purchased as a work by Luca della Robbia, but is clearly 19th century, and probably by Giovanni Bastianini. A second version of the relief is in the Johnson collection in the Philadelphia Museum of Art
