About the work

This drawing has recently been attributed to the Dutch artist Isaac de Moucheron, although when Ionides acquired it he believed it, somewhat optimistically, to be by Canaletto. Moucheron was best known in early 18th-century Amsterdam for painted wall decorations; many of his paintings were of parks or gardens with dominant architectural features. The present drawing may either be a study for a painting or a view of an actual garden.
