In 1998 Richter’s first North American retrospective is shown at the Art Gallery of Ontario and at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.

11 September 2001
11 September: the flight to New York is diverted to Halifax
Richter was flying to New York on 11 September 2001, but because of the attacks, including on the World Trade Center, his plane was diverted to Halifax, Nova Scotia. A few years later he made one small painting specifically about the planes crashing into the towers: “September” (2005).
