John Kane painted Self-Portrait in 1929; it is at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He shows himself flexing his arms and looking straight ahead. Painted arches surround his head, and an imitation frame follows the edges. The canvas is mounted on board. Kane, who taught himself to paint, earned his living through carpentry, house painting and railway work.
