The StudioFilmClub in his studio
Together with the Trinidadian artist Che Lovelace, Doig starts a weekly film club: he selects and screens the films himself and paints a poster for each week's film. He finds the project liberating because it is much more immediate than his usual work.

“White Canoe” sells for $11.3 million
The canvas of 1990–91 sells at Sotheby's for $11.3 million, then an auction record for a living European artist. Paul Schimmel, chief curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, says the sale turned Doig from a hero to other painters into a poster child of the market's excesses.
