He faces three difficult years of proceedings; during the trial he waives a jury and chooses to be tried by a judge alone.
1985–1988
A divided art world
Colleagues sharply disagreed about his guilt: most supported Andre, while Mendieta’s family and feminist activists, convinced of his guilt, reproached his supporters for relieving a white man of responsibility for violence against a Latin American woman. Carolee Schneemann demanded a public explanation, and feminists picketed the Paula Cooper Gallery, where Andre’s show was on.

Acquitted of all charges
Judge Schlesinger, who heard the case without a jury, drops all charges against Andre in connection with Mendieta’s death: he is found not guilty.
