Jan Weenix painted A Seated Monkey from life before 1685; the study is at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Once recorded, the animal could be copied into other compositions without being posed again. Weenix reused this monkey in numerous paintings, including two game still lifes in the same collection. One hangs beside the study, making it possible to compare the observed animal with its later use in a finished composition. The study survives as working material from his studio. It is displayed in room 2.24.

Με τα λόγια του μουσείου

Jan Weenix painted his animal pieces in a highly pragmatic fashion. For instance, once he had depicted this little monkey accurately from life, he could use the study over and over again. The Rijksmuseum owns two game still lifes clearly showing how he went about this: one is hanging next to this work. Weenix copied the monkey, as he did in many other paintings. This studio material allows us to follow his working method.
