Im Leben von Anselm Kiefer

Das ganze Leben
  1. c. 1970

Straw, glass and plants: the Beuys lesson

By 1970, while studying informally under Joseph Beuys at the Düsseldorf academy, Kiefer was working with glass, straw, wood and plant parts, leaving them in their natural form. Familiar materials as carriers of ideas were Beuys's lesson, with his fat and felt; stylistically Kiefer was then close to Georg Baselitz.

  2. 1971

    Married: Julia Kiefer

  3. 1971

Moves to Hornbach; a studio in a former school

In 1971 Kiefer returned to the region of his birth, settling in Hornbach (Walldürn), where his first large studio was in the attic of his house, a former schoolhouse. He stayed in the Neckar-Odenwald district until 1992; the work of this period is known as “The German Years”.
