Meets Erich Heckel
He meets Erich Heckel and is invited to join the Brücke group. He is its only member with formal art training and remains an active member until 1910.
1907
Trip to Italy for an award
He travels to Italy to receive an award and returns in 1908.
1908
Moves to Berlin
He settles in Berlin and joins the Berlin Secession; over the next three years other painters will make the same move.
1908
Meets Kees van Dongen in Paris
On his return from Italy he spends time in Paris, where he meets the Fauvist painter Kees van Dongen and persuades him to join the Brücke.
1910
Founds the New Secession and chairs it
He helps to found the New Secession and becomes its chairman. His decorative, colorful prints, inspired by the art of Van Gogh, Matisse and the Fauves, bring him recognition.
1910
Refused a place in the Berlin Secession exhibition
The Berlin Secession categorically refuses to let him exhibit. After this Pechstein helps to found the New Secession.
