Über die Skulptur

This relief was acquired with an ascription to Francesco da Sangallo, which was later rejected in favour of a much later dating. However, a convincing case has been made for ascribing to Sangallo a relief in Berlin of the Virgin and Child with three Putti, which although much larger and in much higher relief, has very close compositional affinities with this relief. Two drawings in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence ascribed to Sangallo supply further evidence for the ascription of the composition to him.
