About the sculpture
This terracotta relief was modelled by hand
and originally painted. The tender embrace
of mother and child suggests that it would
have hung in a bedchamber. The swag
contains what may be poppy heads. As a
symbol of fertility, they would have been
a suitable subject for a wife and mother.
