Nakahashi was fascinated with images that challenged the norms of depiction. Here, he toyed with our understanding of implied space using trompe l’oeil (“fool the eye”) techniques to create the illusion that an enormous orb is set within an empty landscape that recedes into space. Yet in presenting us with an overlapping series of three-dimensional planes, each carrying a small portion of the composition, he challenged us to complete the picture in our mind’s eye.
