Paris: the first Impressionist exhibition
Repin was in Paris in April 1874, when the First Impressionist Exhibition was held. In a letter to Stasov in 1875 he wrote of the “liberty of the impressionalists” — Manet, Monet and the others — and their “infantile truthfulness”: he admired their treatment of light and colour but felt their work lacked moral or social purpose.
