Über die Skulptur

This statuette relief in ivory is representing the Virgin and Child with St John the Baptist. It has been thought to be Italian or Spanish and dating from the sixteenth-century. Similarities were expressed to Jacopo Sansovino's models (Estella Marcos) and to Bartolomé Ordoñéz (1485-1520). However, despite these parallels, both the eclecticism and clumsy style of carving of this piece suggest that it is in fact a nineteenth-century confection, made in Italy, or perhaps Spain.
