Über die Skulptur

The encounter between a woman and a man in a kiss is illustrated in this sculpture by a wave lapping a rocky shore. Natural phenomena were often used to represent eroticism during this period. Johan Teodor Lundberg’s The Shore and the Wave was made in 1897 and became a famous and frequently reproduced work around the turn of the century in Sweden. King Oscar II commissioned a large version in marble.
