At the outset of the First World War in 1914, Paul Nash (1899-1946) enlisted in the Artists’ Rifles and was posted to France. He was appointed Official War Artist in 1917 as a result of watercolours such as this one. (He was to be made an Official War Artist again in 1940 during the Second World War.) The mystical quality of Nash's work belongs to the tradition of artists such as William Blake (1757-1827), Samuel Palmer (1805-1881) and David Jones (1895-1974).
