Tangka

This scroll painting or tangka depicts Shes rab Senge ge, who founded the ‘lower’ tantric college of Gyume (Tibetan: rGyud smad) at Lhasa in 1433. He is surrounded by masters of the Gelukpa (Tibetan: sGe lugs pa) Order founded by his own master, Tsongkhapa (1357-1419). This painting is noteworthy as an early example of the depiction of Gelukpa teachers. The Order itself had only been founded in the early 15th century. This tangka dates from the middle to the end of the 15th century.
