Founds the New Secession and chairs it
He helps to found the New Secession and becomes its chairman. His decorative, colorful prints, inspired by the art of Van Gogh, Matisse and the Fauves, bring him recognition.

Refused a place in the Berlin Secession exhibition
The Berlin Secession categorically refuses to let him exhibit. After this Pechstein helps to found the New Secession.

Founds the MUIM Institute
Together with Kirchner he founds the MUIM Institute (“Modern Instruction in Painting”).

Break with the Brücke
After years of rising tension, Pechstein shows some of his work at the Berlin Secession on its own, without paintings by other Brücke members, and leaves the group; other accounts say he was expelled. His conservative style appealed to a wider audience, and recognition and awards far outpacing those of his peers bred animosity in the group.
