The curled fingers of this bronze figure form a socket that once held the shaft of an oil lamp. Human figures in bronze were rare during the Shang and Zhou periods, but examples like this, used as lamp supports, have been found in Warring States tombs. Its sculptural realism anticipates the naturalism of the Qin and Western Han eras.
